Pioneering Smart Ports in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is transforming its ports through smart infrastructure and digital innovation. As part of Vision 2030, the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) is leading efforts to modernize logistics operations across the Kingdom.

Through technologies like artificial intelligence, IoT systems, and automated scheduling, ports are becoming faster, smarter, and more reliable. These upgrades are designed to reduce delays, enhance cargo visibility, and improve the overall trade ecosystem.

A Mawani official explains:

As a result, key ports are already showing major improvements. For example, Dammam Port reduced vessel turnaround time by 28%. Meanwhile, Jeddah Islamic Port has piloted autonomous truck operations, reducing congestion and wait times.

This progress is backed by clear performance data:

  • Ship idle time dropped from 24 hours in 2022 to 10 hours in 2025.
  • Customs clearance now takes just one day, down from 3 to 5 days.
  • Port throughput increased from 7.3 million to 9.8 million TEUs.

Furthermore, these changes support both sustainability goals and economic development. By reducing emissions and improving efficiency, Saudi Arabia is becoming a global logistics powerhouse.
